Fried Oyster Mushrooms
Let’s make some Vegan Fried Chicken but with some Mushrooms this time! That’s right, Fried Oyster Mushrooms! So easy and so dang good!!

This was my first time working with Oyster Mushrooms, and it certainly won’t be my last! These are so good and so easy to whip up! They’ve got a meaty chicken like texture, and the breading is seasoned to perfection and crispy!
You can enjoy these on their own like Chicken Fingers, or on a Sandwich!

Ingredients for fried oyster mushrooms
- Oyster Mushrooms – can be found at most Asian Markets, and I can find them at my local Whole Foods, or local Farmers Market, and even at some of the other big chain markets. They can be expensive at places like Whole Foods, so try to find them at an Asian Market where they are much cheaper.

- Seasoned Flour – Just like regular Fried Chicken, we’ll be whipping up a delicious Seasoned Flour to ensure the crispy coating has a lot of flavor!
- Vegan Buttermilk – We’ll also make a Vegan Buttermilk by combining unsweetened plant milk and vinegar!
How to make Fried Oyster Mushrooms
This is quite easy! You just need to prep your dredging stations.

Then dredge the mushrooms in the dry, then wet and repeat to double dredge.

Fry them in some oil until golden brown. And let them rest on a wire rack and enjoy!
How to Serve Fried Oyster Mushrooms
You can serve these up with some BBQ Sauce, or Vegan Ranch or Honey Mustard!

Or with some Remoulade on a Po’ Boy!

Or with some Mashed Potatoes and Gravy!

TIPS FOR FRIED oyster mushrooms
- Use a heavy bottomed pot (Stainless Steel, Cast Iron, Carbon Steel etc)
- I highly recommend a Deep Fry Thermometer to monitor the oil temp.
- Use a neutral tasting, high smoke point oil (Canola, Vegetable, Peanut etc.)
- Make sure to use UNSWEETENED plant milk. I like RIPPLE the best.
- Add flour as needed to thicken the vegan buttermilk mixture.
- Shake off the excess flour and batter when you dredge.
- Fry a test nugget to test the seasoning and adjust as needed.
- Let the fried mushrooms rest on a Wire Rack after frying to prevent a soggy breading.
SAFETY TIPS FOR DEEP FRYING
- Don’t leave the pot unattended.
- Keep children away from the pot.
- Don’t fill the pot more than halfway with oil. Don’t overcrowd it as well.
- Turn the handles of the pot away from you to avoid accidental spills.
- Keep a lid nearby so you can cover the pot if it catches fire.
- Never use water to put out an oil fire.
- Get a Fire Extinguisher just to be extra safe. This isn’t just good for deep frying, but for having in the house in general!

Fried Oyster Mushrooms
Ingredients
- 8 oz Oyster Mushrooms
Vegan Buttermilk
- 1 cup Unsweetened Plant Milk
- 1 Tbsp Hot Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Pickle Brine
- 1 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
Seasoned Flour
- 1 cup Flour
- 1 cup Cornstarch
- 2 Tbsp Baking Powder
- 1 – 2 Tbsp Cajun Seasoning
Instructions
- Prepare your dredging station by whisking the ingredients for the Vegan Buttermilk and Seasoned Flour in separate bowls.
- Heat up oil to 375° F / 190 C either in an electric deep fryer, or a dutch oven with a deep fry thermometer.
- If you want to tear up your mushrooms into smaller pieces while the oil heats up, this is a good time to do so!
- Once oil is up to 375° F, dredge your mushrooms first in the wet mixture, then dry, and then repeat to double dredge, shaking off any excess flour and batter. Place carefully in oil and let it fry until golden brown. Let it rest on a wire rack. Repeat until all your chick'n is fried.
- You can keep the fried mushrooms warm in an oven set to your lowest setting (mine went down to 170° F) or serve immediately (let them cool a bit though, you don't wanna burn your mouth off!)
- ENJOY!

I can’t find oyster mushrooms anywhere. I’m in Wichita, Kansas. Any advice?
Hi, I have recipes for Tofu Fried Chick’n and Seitan Fried Chick’n and Buffalo Cauliflower as well! I’ll update the post with links to all of them!
hi im so excited to try this!! dont have an airfryer due to limited counterspace in my tiny new york apartment lol, but would i be able to use an oven instead? thanks!!
Oh dang, I’m not sure it’ll be as good! I’ve tried baking this batter and it’s just not my favorite. I would try out my air fryer recipe batter and bake that instead! https://theeburgerdude.com/vegan-air-fried-chicken/
This came out great substituting with baby bella mushrooms. The dip in wet, dry, wet, dry is the opposite order of other recipes we’ve used. Your method prevented the batter from washing off.
I made this recipe last night, and it was delicious! I used the deep frying method. My husband said they tasted like a tasty state fair food:) I’m looking forward to them air fried next time. Thanks for all your awesome recipes!
Nice, yes it definitely has a state fair quality to it haha! Glad you both liked it!
I make this recipe anytime I can find oyster mushrooms at the farmers market and it’s soooo delicious! definitely worth the mess and extra calories to deep fry them. I like to serve it with coleslaw, greens, and sweet potato fries for a delicious southern meal.
OH YUM, that sounds like a PLATE!! So glad you dig em!
