Vegan Air Fried Chicken is a great alternative to deep frying! Way less oil, but still crunchy and delicious!

I have a lot of Deep Fried Vegan Chick’n recipes on this site. And every time I post a new one, I get folks asking if they can air fry or bake it instead. So here’s a recipe for air frying (or baking) some delicious Air Fried Vegan Chick’n!

Even though I tend to deep fry my Chick’n, using an AIR FRYER is great too! Obviously, there’s almost no oil, so it’s not only lighter, but it’s easier to clean up. It’s super fast and easy too, so if you aren’t into deep frying, Air Frying or Baking is a great alternative!

why you’ll dig vegan air fried chicken

I understand why folks don’t want to bother with all the oil involved for deep frying. Whether it’s because it’s too expensive, messy, or they just want to avoid oil for health reasons, I totally get it.

So using something like an air fryer or oven is a great way to avoid the hassle of all that oil, and you’ll still get something crunchy and satisfying.

And you can do nuggets instead of sandwich fillets too!

That being said, I should say that while these will come out great, don’t expect them to taste or feel like Deep Fried Vegan Chick’n! They are different, but still good though!

ingredients for air fried chicken

  • Vegan Chick’n – Use whatever you like! I have recipes for Tofu Fillets as well as the fillets from my Seitan Fried Chick’n recipe.
  • Seasoned Flour – This will be a pretty typical seasoned flour mixture. Season the flour how you like (though I provide a detailed recipe below).
  • Vegan Buttermilk – use unsweetened plant milk along with some apple cider vinegar, hot sauce and then a little flour to help get it nice and thick so it sticks to the fillets.
  • Panko Breadcrumbs – I recommend using Panko style breadcrumbs in order to achieve a crispy breading. You can also do some crushed up chips or crackers like I did in my Vegan Filet-O-Fish. Just make sure you crush them up fine enough so the breading isn’t too loose.

how to make air fried chicken

This couldn’t be simpler! Just dredge the fillets in the seasoned flour.

Then the vegan buttermilk, and then into the panko bread crumbs. You can double dredge and coat the patties in the buttermilk and breadcrumbs twice for a thicker breading.

After that, spray them with some cooking oil and air fry or bake them until they are done to your liking!

oven baked option

If you’d like to bake these instead of air frying them, it’s the exact same process except you’ll want to bake them at 425F for about 20 – 24 minutes.

deep or shallow fry option

If you want to try out a deep fried version, you can try the Tofu Fried Chick’n recipe I got! Or you can also just shallow fry these fillets as well.

You can store these in the fridge for 3-5 days, or freezer for 3 months. Reheat in the air fryer! Just do them for about 5 minutes at 380F, and flip and spray and air fry until they are cooked to your liking.

  • 3 – 4 Vegan Chick’n Fillets*

Dry Dredge

  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne
  • 1/8 tsp white pepper
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 – 1 tsp salt

Wet Dredge (Vegan Buttermilk)

  • 1 cup unsweetened plant milk
  • 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp hot sauce
  • 3 – 4 Tbsp flour

Panko Breadcrumbs

  • 1 – 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • Prepare the dry, wet and panko mixtures separately in their own bowls.
  • Dredge each fillet first in the dry mixture, then wet, and then into the panko. Shake off the excess each time you dredge it and make sure you thoroughly coat it. If you want to double dredge for a thicker breading, dredge in the dry, wet, panko, and then the wet and panko again. You may need to adjust and increase the wet mixture if you go this route!
  • Spray the filets with a bit of oil, and then Air Fry at 380 F for about 12 – 16 minutes, flipping halfway through. If more time is required, air fry in 3 – 4 minute intervals, checking frequently to avoid burning them.

Baking Option

  • To bake, follow the same instructions as above, but bake in a preheated oven at 425 F for about 16 – 20 minutes, flipping and spraying halfway through. If additional baking time is needed, bake in 3 – 4 minute intervals, checking frequently to avoid burning them.

  1. Can I substitute the flour for more cornstarch or just omit the flour? I don’t have any right now (weird conundrum, I know)

    1. I’m not sure how that will turn out, I think only using cornstarch will make it too dense and hard.
