Vegan Doner Kebab

A delicious plant-based spin on the Viral Recipe, this Vegan Doner Kebab is super dang good and easy to whip up!

I don’t usually follow trends but when I saw the Doner Kebab by Meze Mike, I knew I had to follow suite and make a vegan version ASAP! And the good news is since we are just swapping out the cow meat for plant meat, this is super easy to throw together!

ingredients for Vegan Doner Kebab

The Meat – I’m using Impossible Meat in this recipe, but use your favorite vegan ground beef. If you don’t like or want to use vegan ground beef, you can do something similar like I do in my Tofu Gyros recipe or my Vegan Shawarma recipe and use some of my Beefy Soy Curls instead!

Aromatics and Seasonings – Other than the meat, we just need an onion which we will puree, and a few seasonings.

Veggies – You can top your kebab with whatever you like, but I opted for some iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, and red onions that I tossed in some chopped parsley, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt.

Yogurt Herb Sauce – I’m also including a recipe for a zippy herb sauce that really ties the whole thing together!

Bread – You can use whatever you like, there’s Turkish Pide, or Pita, and Lavash work excellent as well!

how to make Vegan Doner Kebab

Add the onion to a food processor and blend until it’s a smooth puree.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the onion and the rest of the ingredients. Mix with your clean hands.

Get a sheet of parchment paper. Spray it with cooking oil. Add a large handful of the meat mixture to the middle. Then another piece of parchment paper on top. Using a rolling pin, roll the meat mixture into a thin layer to the edges of the parchment paper (doesn’t have to be a perfect rectangle shape)

Gently peel pack the top piece of parchment paper, and then roll the flattened meat inside the bottom parchment paper like a burrito, keeping each roll night and tight.

Bake for 30 minutes, then remove from the baking sheet and unroll the meat from the parchment paper.

Optionally but recommended, heat up a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the vegan doner meat and cook for about 5 – 6 minutes, just to brown it a bit more.

Warm up a pita, or flatbread and top with the doner meat, and whatever toppings you like (I did lettuce, tomato and red onions) along with a generous portion of the Herb Yogurt Sauce.

storage

The doner meat is good for about 2 – 3 days in the fridge, the Yogurt Herb Sauce is good for about 4 -5 (thought it never lasts that long!)

  2. This was absolutely delicious!! I was a bit intimidated by the process of rolling out and baking the “meat” but it was actually very easy and it’s totally worth the effort! Will absolutely make this again!!

I was nervous at the quantity of dill in the sauce because dill is overwhelming to me, but it was perfect.

I rolled it out a bit too thin, and I will use more salt next time, but this was a winner.

I don’t usually comment on recipes because I am lazy, but OMG! This recipe is amazing! Easy to make and incredible flavour. It will be my go to recipe for when I have company over for dinner.

    1. You can try it, but I tried using my tvp burger recipe with the added seasonings and while it was good I felt it could’ve been better!

  5. Hey there Thee Burger Dude! I’ve been loving all your recipes and this one is by far my most favourite. Coming from Australia I highly request you to make a vegan version of the Halal Snack Pack (H.S.P) since it’s arguably one of the best foods here and will help out a ton for anyone wanting to become vegan!
