The Most Underrated Fast Food Cheeseburger! Thanks to the super delicious secret sauce which is good on ANYTHING! Let’s make it VEGAN!

⁣In my 20s, I lived within a mile of not one, but two Del Tacos. They were both open 24 hours and there was no way I wouldn’t stop by one of them on the way home after a night out. Needless to say, I ate these like no tomorrow before going vegan, and what I remember most was the sauce. It’s a solid burger, but the sauce is the Vegan Double Del Cheeseburger crowning glory.

According to Del Taco’s website, these come with a standard burger sauce. I believe I used to sub that for the secret sauce. Or it used to just come with secret sauce, I can’t remember! All I know is that sauce makes the burger way better than your average burger.

We’re also gonna season this burger with some Taco Seasoning. I always found that burgers from taco shops were always some of my favorites. I think it’s probably because the grill is seasoned with all the different taco meats. So adding some taco seasoning will help duplicate that flavor. Plus it just tastes good!

Secret Sauce

When doing research on the sauce, I found that most recipes called for mayo, buttermilk, and lime. I followed that recipe (using Ripple with a splash of apple cider vinegar for the buttermilk) but it didn’t taste right. When I looked up the ingredients online, I found that they use Lactic Acid!

So I tried that out, and wouldn’t you know it, it tasted like I remember! It’s super zippy and tangy!

Now I’ve had folks ask me if they can use citric acid or lime juice instead of lactic acid. I tested both of those substitutes out. I found that citric acid is way more potent and lime juice is way more mellow. So if you aren’t using lactic acid, I suggest using way less citric acid, or a bit more lime juice. Keep in mind the more lime juice you add, the thinner the sauce will get.

But I really dig having this sauce in the fridge. You can use it on a Double Del obviously, but it’s also great on tacos, or with some fries! Burritos, sandwiches, even salads could work!

I even whipped up some Vegan Chicken Tacos like Del Taco! I used Daring Chicken (not sponsored, but they are great for this taco).

Bacon double del

Oh and you can throw some Rice Paper Bacon on top to make a Bacon Double Del too of course!

Double del Burger

  • Two 3 oz patties of plant-based meat
  • 2 slices vegan cheese
  • Shredded iceberg lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Diced onion
  • 1 sesame seed bun
  • Taco seasoning
  • Vegan Bacon optional

Secret Sauce

  • 1/2 cup vegan mayo
  • 2 tsp vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened plant milk
  • 1/4 – 1/2 tsp vegan lactic acid*
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt more to taste

  • To make the Secret Sauce, combine everything in a bowl. Taste and adjust. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • Prep your veggies, shred lettuce, slice tomato, and chop your onions.
  • Grill buns in a bit of oil or vegan butter until golden brown. Set aside. ⁣⁣⁣
  • Press / form your burger patties so they match the circumference of your buns. Then over medium high heat, grill on each side for 3-4 minutes. ⁣⁣⁣Season with taco seasoning of choice.
  • After you flip the patties, add a slice of cheese to each one and cover with a melting dome after adding a tablespoon of water to pan. The steam from the water will help melt the cheese.
  • Once Cheese is melted, assemble as follows; bottom bun, Secret Sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion, both patties with melted cheese, more sauce, top bun.⁣⁣⁣
  • ENJOY!⁣⁣

*You can use citric acid or lime juice instead of lactic acid. Just be aware that citric acid is much more powerful so use less. On the flipside, lime juice is more mellow, so you'll want to use more, however the more lime juice you use, the thinner the sauce will be. Always adjust to taste!
