BBQ Tofu Sandwich
Making a BBQ Tofu Sandwich is as easy as it is delicious! Shredded Tofu maximizes flavor and texture for an amazing BBQ Sandwich!

I made a video a while back exploring the different ways to make a Vegan BBQ Sandwich, and admittedly, Tofu was not my favorite. However, that all changed when I made my Shredded Tofu Chicken! That not only amped up the flavor, but the texture so it’s a just as good as the other options, but also packed with protein!

That said, if you want to keep it simple, you can do the old recipe of simply adding some BBQ Rub and Sauce to some Shredded Tofu! It’s still totally delicious!

- Super Firm Tofu – I highly recommend Super Firm Tofu as it’s vacuum packed and doesn’t require pressing. I haven’t tested this recipe out with Extra Firm but if you can only find that, then you’ll wanna press it for at least 30 minutes.


Marinade – For the marinade, we need some pantry staples mostly! Soy Sauce, Herbs and Spices, such as Dried Thyme, Parsley, Garlic and Onion Powder, and some Nutritional Yeast and Vegan Mayo or Oil! Feel free to add in some BBQ Rub too!

- BBQ Sauce – You can find vegan friendly BBQ Sauce at most grocery stores, but I really like making my own Homemade BBQ Sauce. It’s super quick and easy, and you can tailor it to your tastes.

how to make a BBQ Tofu Sandwich
This couldn’t be easier! First, shred your tofu with a cheese grater.
Make the marinade by combining all the ingredients.
Then, add the tofu to a pan and grill it for a few minutes until it’s golden brown, then pour the marinade over.
Next, stir to incorporate the marinade, and cook for another 4 – 5 minutes. Season to taste and then slather on some BBQ Sauce!
Toast your burger bun, top with Coleslaw, Pickles, Vegan Mayo, Pickled Onions, whatever you like!

BBQ Tofu Sandwich
Ingredients
- 16 oz Super Firm Tofu
- 1/4 – 1 cup BBQ Sauce
Marinade
- 2 Tbsp Vegan Mayo
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 2 tsp White Vinegar
- 1 Tbsp Water more as needed
- 2 Tbsp Nutritional Yeast
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
- 1/2 tsp Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp Dried Parsley
- 1 tsp Dried Thyme
For Sandwich
Instructions
- I highly recommend using Super Firm Tofu, the kind that’s vacuum packed. Extra Firm will need to be pressed and you might not get it as crispy as you’d like!
- Make the marinade by whisking all the ingredients together.
- Grate the tofu with the large holes of a cheese grater.
- Heat up a non-stick or well seasoned pan over medium heat, add about 1 Tbsp of cooking oil, and then half the tofu. I recommend doing this in two batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
- Spread the tofu into an even layer and cook without stirring for 3 – 4 minutes or until it’s golden brown. Flip and repeat. Once cooked to your liking, remove from the pan. Repeat with the other half of the tofu.
- Pour over the marinade and stir to combine. Cook for another 3 – 4 minutes or until browned to your liking.
- Next add in as much BBQ Sauce as you’d like. Start with 1/4 cup and add more as you see fit.
- Toast your burger buns (or not, up to you!) and then assemble each sandwich with some Vegan Mayo, Pickles, Coleslaw and BBQ Tofu and enjoy!
