Beer Battered Onion Rings
The only thing better than Onion Rings is Beer Battered Onion Rings! Super airy and crunchy, and perfect as a side or on a burger!

It’s hard to beat Beer Battered Onion Rings. The batter is more like a Tempura style, so it’s super crispy and airy from the the carbonation in the beer.

I made mine with a few extra ingredients to make them a little spicy (but not too spicy I swear!) These are killer on their own, but dipping them in some Vegan Ranch or BBQ Sauce takes them out of this world!

Ingredients for beer battered Onion Rings
- Onions – For the onions, I used yellow. You can use sweeter onions too, Vidalia and what not.
- Beer – For the beer, you can use whatever you want, but I prefer a lighter beer or lager. You can also totally use sparkly water if you don’t drink beer!
- Seasoned Flour – Aside from the main ingredients we just need a batter made with flour, cornstarch and some seasonings. Even though these aren’t spicy, you can totally leave out the ingredients such as the chipotle powder, jalapeno brine etc if you want and they will still be super good!

Technically these are a side, but I honestly ate them for lunch, no regrets!

How to make Beer Battered Onion Rings
This is quite simple!
- Cut Onion Rings, and soak them in ice water.
- While the Onions Rings soak, prepare the dredging stations.
- Dry the Onion Rings, then dredge them in the flour and beer batter.
- Fry until Golden Brown!
- Enjoy!
Storage
These are best fresh, but you can also make a bit batch and freeze them for later. Just let them cool down, then flash freeze them on a sheet tray for an hour or so. Then add them to a freezer safe container or freezer bag.
Reheat in the oven or air fryer at 375 F for about 15 – 20 minutes or until heated through.

Beer Battered Onion Rings
Ingredients
- 2 Large Onions (Yellow or Sweet will work)
Dry Mix
- 1/2 cup Flour
- 1/2 cup Corn Starch
- 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
- 1 Tbsp Smoked Paprika
- 1 Tbsp Chili Seasoning
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp Chipotle Powder (or Cayenne)
- 1/2 – 1 tsp Salt
Wet Mix
- 1 1/2 cup Beer (or Sparkling Water)
- 1 cup Flour
- 2 Tbsp Pickle Brine
- 2 Tbsp Pickled JalapeƱo Brine
Instructions
- Cut your onions into rings about 1/2 inch thick. Place the onion rings in a bowl of ice water.
- Combine all ingredients for the dry mix in a bowl. Do the same for the ingredients of the wet mix in another bowl. The wet mix should be a little runnier than pancake mix. Make sure it's not too goopy! Add more beer if it's too thick, or a little more flour if it's too thin.
- Bring a pot of oil to 375 degrees F / 190 C.
- Remove onions from the bowl of ice water and pat dry.
- Dredge each onion ring in the flour, then the beer batter. Shake off any excess. I recommend using a fork to handle the onions as it's easier and less messy than using your hands.
- Carefully place in the oil, make sure you don't crowd the pot! Fry until golden brown, then remove to cool on a cooling rack. Sprinkle with a little salt. Once all the onion rings are fried, serve by themselves, or preferably with some vegan ranch or bbq sauce.
- ENJOY!
