A Childhood Classic from Marie Callender’s made VEGAN! It’s the Vegan Frisco Burger!

This was my favorite Burger when I was a little kid. We’d go to Marie Callender’s once a week and I’m pretty sure I ordered this exclusively. Back then when I found something I liked, I stuck with it. I remember I used to ask to eat Macaroni and Cheese so often that my mom tried to make me sick of it by letting me eat it every night. After a week she realized I called her bluff and I could actually eat it every night! In your face MOM!⁣⁣⁣⁣

But I digress! This Burger hit all the notes that I remember. It’s probably been close to 25 years since I’ve had one of these, but I was instantly transported back to 1980s Van Nuys on the first bite.⁣⁣⁣⁣

Vegan Frisco Burger

Two things that make a Frisco Burger unique are the Parmesan Grilled Sourdough and the Frisco sauce, which is essentially spicy Thousand Island! I recommend the finely grated parmesan, or if you can only find the shredded or blocks. Then, I would suggest blending them up to a chunky powder, so good mixed in with some butter and garlic!

For the bread, you can either use store bought sourdough or home made obviously. I like using the longer loaves from the bakery section so I can cut it however thick I want!

Ingredients
  

Burger Recipe

  • 2 slices sourdough bread
  • 1 Tbsp vegan butter
  • 1 clove garlic crushed / minced
  • 1 Tbsp vegan parmesan finely grated, like the powder stuff
  • 4 oz plant based meat
  • 1 slice vegan cheese
  • Iceberg lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Dill pickle slices

Frisco Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp vegan mayo
  • 1/2 Tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp prepared horseradish
  • 1 tsp hot sauce
  • Dash of smoked paprika
  • Dash of garlic powder
  • Dash of vinegar

Instructions
 

  • Prepare the Frisco sauce by combining all ingredients and set aside in the fridge.
  • Let the butter come to room temperature (so it's softened) and add the minced garlic clove and parmesan cheese, stir to combine.
  • Spread the garlic parmesan butter on your bread and grill over medium heat until golden brown and set aside.
  • Roll your plant based meat into a meatball or form into a patty with a burger press.
  • Add your burger patty to the pan and cook for 3-4 mins.
  • If doing a smash burger, smash the meatball with a spatula to form a patty. You can use some cooking spray or a piece of parchment / wax paper on your spatula to keep it from sticking. ⁣
  • Flip your burger after about 3-4 minutes. Add the cheese, then a little bit of water to the pan, and cover immediately to steam and melt the cheese.
  • Once cheese is melted, assemble the burger as shown, add a liberal amount of the Frisco sauce!
  • ENJOY!
