Heinz Beans (Homemade and Better)
I love Heinz Beans, but they are a little pricey for me out in the US. Making them at home is cheaper, and also tastier too!

I do love some Heinz Beans! Unfortunately for me, I can’t find them for less than $4. On top of that, while they are good out of the can, adding a few seasonings makes them a lot better.
So I figured I’d make some for myself, save a few bucks and make them tastier right out of the gate!

These are great on their own, or with a Tofu Scramble, but of course it’s great on Beans on Toast too!

Now do these tase EXACTLY like the canned stuff? To me, they taste very similar but better! The Heinz Beans are good, but a bit sweet for my taste. My recipe still hits those sweet notes, but there’s a bit more savory flavor too, so it contrasts well with the sweeter notes in my opinion!

ingredients for Heinz Beans
- Beans – We’ll be using Navy Beans, also known as White Beans, and Haricot Beans.

- Vegan Worcestershire – I have a recipe, but there are also many Vegan Worcestershire sauces out there. Just check the back for Anchovy!

- Sauce Ingredients – Since it’s a tomato based sauce, we’ll do some tomato paste and ketchup. Then it’s just vinegar, brown sugar, onion and garlic powder, and some cornstarch to thicken.

- Optional Ingredients – You can totally season this how you like! I will sometimes add Curry Powder, Smoked Paprika, Nutritional Yeast, anything you like!
how to make Heinz Beans
Drain and wash the beans. Reserve the bean juice (aka aquafaba).
In a saucepan over medium heat, add 1 tsp of cooking oil. Then the tomato paste. Stir and fry the tomato paste for just 30 seconds or so, making sure not to burn it.
Add the broth, Worcestershire, ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, garlic and onion powder. Stir to combine, then add in the beans and combine.
Combine the cornstarch and water in a small bowl. Then add to the pan and stir to combine. This should thicken the sauce.
Taste and adjust for seasoning, if the sauce is too thick, you can thin it out with some of the aquafaba which will also make the sauce smoother and more emulsified.
Enjoy immediately!

Storage
Store in the fridge and use within 3 – 4 days. You may need to add some liquid when reheating if it’s too thick.h the beans. Reserve the bean juice (aka aquafaba).
