Beans on Toast can be a delightful breakfast or snack if made correctly! Just add some seasonings and it’s a hearty little meal!

Okay, I know what you’re thinking, “Beans On Toast? Gross!” or “Beans on Toast is so simple, why would you need a recipe for it?” To the former I say you are wrong, and to the latter I say you are wrong because too many folks think the former! Let me explain.

Beans on Toast is delicious, but with a few caveats. First, if you can find those Heinz Beans (or Branston is good too from what I’ve heard), you don’t wanna simply heat them up and throw them on some plain white toast. Not only do we need to season the beans, but we need to pick the right kind of bread, and give it a proper treatment too!

What beans go on Beans on toast?

The most common beans I see for these are the Heinz Beans, and Branston Beans. The problem with these beans is they are expensive in the US since they’re imported. They usually cost me $5 per can. I find them at Ralphs / Kroger or Cost Plus. Same with Branston, I can’t find them here, but I just ordered some and they were a pretty penny! I think I’ll probably do a recipe for them once I get them, let me know if you’d like to see that!

That being said, you can use any baked beans you like!

how do i season beans on toast?

So I think a lot of Americans fail to season these beans when they try it. I suggest using a bunch of seasonings to see what you like, here’s a few suggestions:

  • Nutritional Yeast
  • Curry Powder
  • Lots of Black Pepper
  • Smoked Paprika
  • MSG
  • Onion & Garlic Powder
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Hot Sauce
  • Grated Vegan Cheese
  • You Get the Idea!

what’s the best bread for beans on toast?

I found that using plain white bread resulted in soggy bread, no matter how much I toasted it. I really prefer a good sturdy sourdough. You can even pick it up and eat it with your hands, which I know is a no-no but I’m American, I break all the rules (especially British rules!)

You still wanna toast the heck out of it, and spread a good amount of vegan butter and if you’re up for it, some Marmite! Highly recommended!

So in conclusion, Beans on Toast is simple and delicious, but I do think there’s a few crucial steps needed to ensure a proper B on T experience!
