Ingredients

  • 2 (16 oz) Cans Navy Beans* (aka Haricot, White Beans)
  • 1 tsp Cooking Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 1 cup Vegan Chicken Broth (or Veggie Broth)
  • 2 Tbsp Vegan Worcestershire
  • 1/4 cup Ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp White Vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • Salt & Pepper (to taste)
  • 1 - 1 1/2 Tbsp Cornstarch
  • 3 Tbsp Water

Optional Ingredients

Instructions

  • Drain and wash the beans. Reserve the bean juice (aka aquafaba).
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, add 1 tsp of cooking oil. Then the tomato paste. Stir and fry the tomato paste for just 30 seconds or so, making sure not to burn it.
  • Add the broth, Worcestershire, ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, garlic and onion powder. Stir to combine, then add in the beans and combine.
  • Taste and adjust for seasoning, and keep warm on low.
  • Combine the cornstarch and water in a small bowl. Then add to the pan and stir to combine. This should thicken the sauce.
  • Taste and adjust again for seasoning, if the sauce is too thick, you can thin it out with some of the aquafaba which will also make the sauce smoother and more emulsified.
You can add any other seasonings you like! I've included some optional spices I like to use every now and then!
  • Enjoy immediately. Store in the fridge and use within 3 - 4 days. You may need to add some liquid when reheating if it's too thick.

Notes

*If using freshly cooked beans, you'll need 3 Cups / 500g of cooked beans.
