Tofu BBQ Skewers

These Tofu BBQ Skewers are so dang easy and delicious! Perfect for grilling indoors or outdoors too, and great on a taco or sandwich!

Last year I made some Tofu Souvlaki, it’s one of my favorites, so I thought why not make some simple Tofu BBQ Skewers too? And like the Souvlaki, these come together in no time flat. Perfect for a quick BBQ at home on a weeknight. You can also prep it before hand so it’s ready to go at any moment!

You can eat it on its own or add it to a sandwich or taco! I’ve been eating some tacos with my Alabama White Sauce and Vinegar Slaw all week!

What’s the best tofu for Tofu BBQ Skewers?

I highly recommend Super Firm Tofu as it’s vacuum packed and doesn’t require pressing. I haven’t tested this recipe out with Extra Firm but if you can only find that, you’ll wanna press it for at least 30 minutes.

ingredients for Tofu BBQ Skewers

Besides the tofu, we are really just using some pantry staples to season this!

  • Oil, Soy Sauce, Vinegar – I don’t recommend skipping the oil on this one, it helps it get nice and browned. And use Tamari or Coconut Aminos if you can’t do Soy Sauce.
  • Seasonings – We’ll be using some Nutritional Yeast, Smoked Paprika, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Chili Powder Salt and Pepper!
  • BBQ Sauce – Obviously we need some BBQ Sauce! You can make my homemade BBQ Sauce or use your favorite store-bought.

how to make Tofu BBQ Skewers

To prep the marinade, simply combine and whisk everything in a bowl, though if you can, I highly suggest blending the marinade to make it smooth and emulsified.

Pat the tofu dry, and then break it into bite sized chunks. This will give us more nooks and crannies for the marinade to stick to.

Pour the marinade over the tofu and gently toss to coat. Taste one chunk and adjust seasoning as needed.

You can marinade and store for the next day to meal prep too!

Skewer the tofu. If using wooden skewers on a BBQ Grill, make sure to soak them in water for 20 – 30 minutes.

Heat up a 12″ skillet over medium heat, pre-heat for 3 – 4 minutes. Then add in the tofu skewers and cook for 2 – 3 minutes per side.

Brush with BBQ Sauce, cook for another couple minutes to caramelize the BBQ Sauce (making sure not to burn it).

Of course feel free to cook these outside on a BBQ Grill too! Just add them to a hot grill and cook for 2 – 3 minutes per side or until browned and beautiful.

You can also skip the skewers and cook these loosey goosey in a pan. Just make sure you don’t crowd the pan. You may need to do this in batches.

Toss them in the BBQ Sauce!

storage

You can store the marinated tofu in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week. Or cook them and store them for later as well! They are both good.

Recipe Ideas

I’ve been enjoying this all week! One of my favorites was on some Mac n’ Cheese!

And it’s also good in a taco with my Alabama White Sauce and Vinegar Coleslaw.

Ingredients

Marinade

  • 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Vegan Mayo (or Neutral Oil)
  • 1 Tbsp Water
  • 1 tsp Vinegar (or Lemon Juice)
  • 1 Tbsp Hot Sauce (like Frank's)
  • 2 Tbsp Nutritional Yeast
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Smoked Paprika
  • 1/2 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Cayenne
  • Salt & Pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  • I highly recommend using Super Firm tofu, it's vacuum sealed and doesn't require pressing. You can try using Extra Firm tofu and press it for 30 minutes, but Super Firm is ideal.
  • Take the tofu out of it’s packaging and pat it dry with a paper towel. Break the tofu into bite sized chunks. I find it’s easiest to break the whole block in half, and then keep breaking each section in half until they are about bite size.
  • Combine all the ingredients for the marinade. I highly recommend blending them in a blender to emulsify. In a bowl toss the tofu chunks with the marinade until thoroughly coated.
  • You can store for later, or cook them now.
  • Add the tofu chunks to some skewers. If using wooden skewers on a BBQ Grill, make sure to soak them in water for 20 – 30 minutes.
  • Heat up a 12″ skillet over medium heat, pre-heat for 3 – 4 minutes. Then add in the tofu skewers and cook for 2 – 3 minutes per side.
  • Brush with BBQ Sauce, cook for another couple minutes to caramelize the BBQ Sauce (making sure not to burn it).
  • ENJOY!

BBQ Grill

  • Of course feel free to cook these outside on a BBQ Grill too! Just add them to a hot grill and cook for 2 – 3 minutes per side or until browned and beautiful.

No Skewer Version

  • You can also skip the skewers and cook these loosey goosey in a pan. Just make sure you don’t crowd the pan. You may need to do this in batches.
