Easy Vegan Gravy
This Vegan Gravy is as Easy as Gravy! Super rich and delicious, you’ll want to drizzle it on just about anything you can!

Gravy is one of those things that I was always mystified by before going vegan. Like, you gotta roast an animal, and then use the rendered fat? And you add what else to it? How do you make it thick? I honestly just never made it! Good news is this Vegan Gravy requires no animals and it’s easy as HECK!

It’s also super delicious! I know something like this is good when I can just eat it with a spoon like soup! This stuff is perfect for some Mashed Potatoes, a Vegan Roast Turkey, or a Shepherd’s Pie! I even ate some with just a piece of bread and it was one of the best things I ate that day.

why you’ll dig vegan Gravy
Besides the fact that it’s super delicious, it’s also incredibly easy to make! It’s literally just a roux with some stock and seasonings! You can also customize it to your heart’s content.
It’s great on just about any Holiday dish too! Maybe not pumpkin pie, but who knows!

ingredients for vegan Gravy
- Vegan Butter – Gravy is mostly fat, so vegan butter will do a great job at that!
- Flour – To thicken the gravy of course!
- Vegan Beef Broth or Veggie Broth – You can use any kind of broth you like, just make sure it’s tasty!
- Mushroom Seasoning – I use this stuff all the time, but if you can’t get it or something like it, you can always use some MSG instead. I’ve recently tested this with both Miso Paste and Nutritional Yeast and the Miso Paste version was good, but tasted a bit too much like Miso Paste. Nutritional Yeast was nuttier and earthier than I remember. So some kind of Mushroom Seasoning is ideal!
- Browning Sauce – Kitchen Bouquet and Gravy Master are my choices for this. It’s mostly for color but does add some flavor. If you can’t get it, don’t worry about it, your gravy might just be a bit lighter in color.
- Other Additions – You can always add other umami packed ingredients into this. Soy sauce, vegan steak sauce, vegan worcestershire would all work great, so get creative and have fun with it!
how to make vegan Gravy
First melt the vegan butter in a skillet or saucepan. Then add in the flour one tablespoon at a time and whisk it in. Add in the broth a bit at a time and whisk that in as well. Then add in everything else, whisk and reduce to your desired consistency.

You’re done, use your Easy Vegan Gravy however you’d like!

Vegan Gravy
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup Vegan Butter
- 4 – 6 Tbsp Flour
- 2 – 3 cups Vegan Beef Broth (or Veggie Broth)
- 1 – 3 tsp Mushroom Seasoning (I used Imperial Taste Brand) (See Notes)
- 1 – 2 tsp Gravy Master or Kitchen Bouquet (optional for color)
- 1/2 – 1 tsp Vegan Worcestershire
- Salt & Pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a skillet, over medium heat, melt the butter, then whisk in the flour 1 Tbsp at a time. Once all flour has been whisked in, cook for one minute to get rid of the raw flour. Use 6 Tbsp of flour for a thicker gravy, 4 for a thinner one.
- Dissolve mushroom seasoning or nutritional yeast into the vegan beef / veggie broth. Whisk in the broth about 1/2 cup at a time until the gravy is about as thick as you'd like. Add the browning sauce and vegan Worcestershire.
- Whisk to combine and then reduce and thicken to desired consistency. Taste and adjust for seasoning. Keep warm on low. If it gets to thick, just thin it out with a splash of water!

I use this at Thanksgiving and it is a fan favorite. I just gluten free flour for my daughter’s celiac disease and it works great. I usually throw in some MSG, garlic and onion powder, 1/2tsp veganWorcestershire, and just fiddle around with it until it’s just the right
“umami-ness”. Made according to the recipe it’s fantastic as is.
Awesome, so glad it works GF too! Thank you!
I am allergic to mushrooms. Any suggestions for a replacement? Thanks!
You can try some nutritional yeast!
Great and easy recipe!
Note to self: Don’t add any salt. It is perfect as is. And 4 tbsp of flour is good.
Really great flavor and consistency. It tastes just like “regular” gravy. Thanks for the recipe!
Oh excellent, this makes my day! Glad you liked it!
Just made this today for Thanksgiving. It is so simple and so delicious this is now my go to gravy. I love all your recipes. 🤎
Heck yes, so happy to hear it, thank you!!
This gravy is *so* good. It’s good on vegan sausage. It’s good on biscuits. It’s good on fries/poutine. My boys said I shouldn’t lick the plate… But I may have done. I had to buy the mushroom seasoning and the Gravy Master and it was worth it
I used 3C no-beef broth, 6 Tbsp Flour, 3 tsp Mushroom Seasoning, 1.5 tsp Gravy Master and
1/2 tsp Vegan Worcestershire.
I’ll definitely make this again.
Awesome! I need to try it with poutine! So glad you dig it, thank you!
