Vegan Tuna Melt
If a Grilled Cheese and a Tuna Salad Sandwich had a baby, it would be this! One of my old favorites but Vegan!

I used to love Tuna Melts! Everytime I went to some 1950s Rock-a-Doodle Diner, if I didn’t get my usual Burger, I would more than likely order a Tuna Melt!
And look, I know that some folks can’t get down with these because they don’t like Hot Tuna Salad! I get it! Well I have a method for making these if that’s you so let’s get to it!

Vegan Tuna Melt Ingredients
- Vegan Tuna Salad – First, you’ll wanna make one of my Vegan Tuna Salad recipes. You can do Chickpeas, Jackfruit or Tofu! Or a combination of 2 or all of them!

- Bread – You can honestly go with whatever bread you like, but I personally love White, Sourdough or Rye!
- Vegan Butter – to spread on your Bread of course! You can also do Vegan Mayo instead if you like.
- Cheese – American Cheese is the classic choice. I really like the Follow Your Heart slices, but use your favorite!
- Pickles & Mustard – Optional but recommended!
how to make a vegan tuna melt
CLASSIC TUNA MELT – To make a Classic Tuna Melt, simply butter your bread of choice (white, sourdough or rye work well). Make sure the butter is softened! I will cut them into 1 Tbsp portions and put it on a plate in the oven or by a window.

Add a slice of the buttered bread to a skillet over medium low heat. Then a slice of vegan american cheese, some tuna salad, another slice of cheese on top, and then grill over medium low heat.

Flip once golden brown and then grill the other side, it’s that easy!

However if you don’t like to get your Tuna Salad hot, here’s another method! Basically you want to make a Grilled Cheese. Then split it open and add your cold vegan tuna salad, and if you’re like me, some mustard and pickles!

These are best eaten fresh (though I will admit I had some leftover and they are good out of the fridge too, but best eaten fresh and hot!)
here’s a handy dandy video!

- 2 Tbsp Vegan Butter
- Dill Pickle Slices (optional)
- Mustard (optional)
Instructions
Classic Method
- To make a Classic Tuna Melt, simply butter your bread of choice (white, sourdough or rye work well). Make sure the butter is softened! I will cut them into 1 Tbsp portions and put it on a plate in the oven or by a window.
- Add a slice of the buttered bread (butter side down) to a non-stick skillet over medium low heat. Then a slice of vegan american cheese, 1/2 – 1 cup of the vegan tuna salad, another slice of cheese on top, then the other slice of buttered bread (butter side up) and then grill over medium low heat.
- Grill on medium low heat until browned (about 4 – 5 minutes, check to make sure you don't burn the bread). Flip and grill the other side until browned. You can also add a lid to the skillet to help the cheese melt.
- Remove from heat once cooked to perfection. You can add some pickles and mustard if you like and enjoy!
Cold Tuna Salad Method

- Once the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown, remove from the heat. Carefully pull the two pieces of bread apart. Then dress one with the vegan tuna salad, and pickles and mustard if you fancy that. Add the top bread back and enjoy!
