Vegan French Onion Burger

If you love burgers and the flavor of French Onion Soup, then you gotta make this French Onion Burger!

French Onion Soup is amazing of course! So are burgers, therefore, it’s only natural to want to combine them! And this French Onion Burger hits all the notes that I would want!

You got the savory seasoned burger patty, the zippy dijonnaise and of course the caramelized onions! It’s a truly decadent burger and honestly, it’s my actual favorite! No joke, this burger would be in my last meal for sure!

ingredients for a French Onion Burger

the buns

For the buns, you can use whatever you like, but if you can find some Vegan Brioche Buns, they are ideal. You could even make my homemade Burger Buns which are similar to Brioche!

Burger Patties

For the patties I just used some Impossible meat, but if you don’t wanna use store-bought plant-based meat, check out my TVP BURGER RECIPE for a homemade burger patty. If you go that route I would maybe leave out the Celery Salt when making the Onion Soup Mix.

Onion Mix Seasoning

Speaking of which, you can totally use a few tablespoons of something like the Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix. Or you can do what I did and just use some pantry staples to make your own!

dijonnaise

Dijonnaise is the condiment of choice for a burger like this. All you need is some Vegan Mayo and Dijon Mustard. White Wine Vinegar and White Pepper are also nice additions!

Caramelized Onions

And of course, we need Caramelized Onions for this kind of Burger! I recommend making some of my Freezer Friendly Caramelized Onions so you can whip up one of these burgers whenever you like!

how to make a French Onion Burger

Cook the Caramelized Onions! I have a whole post for this, but if you already know how to Caramelize Onions, then do your thing!

Next make the Dijonnaise by simply whisking the ingredients together.

To a bowl, add your vegan meat, Onion Mix Seasoning and Worcestershire Sauce. Gently combine with clean hands.

For the patties, I recommend weighing out 4 oz (115g) or 6 oz (170g) patties of the burger mixture. Then form a patty with a cookie cutter. Or use a burger iron or spatula to smash the balls into patties in between 2 pieces of burger paper.

You can toast your buns however you like, but I prefer a dry toast as I find this keeps the buns from getting soggy.

Add your burger patties to the pan, season with salt and pepper. Cook them for about 3 minutes.

Then flip them and add a slice of Vegan Gouda or Provolone cheese. Add a little water and then use a Melting Dome to cover and steam to melt the cheese for about 1 – 2 minutes.

Assemble the burger as follows from bottom to top: bun, cheeseburger patty, liberal amount of caramelized onions, dijonnaise, top bun!
