Impossible Whopper

This homemade Impossible Whopper is way better than Burger King, and it’s also way cheaper too! Perfect on the grill or stovetop!

Back in the 1990s, I would double fist 99¢ Whoppers after band practice. They were my main source of sustenance as a teenage drummer and I never tired of them!

These days I eat them a lot less often, even though Burger King has an Impossible Whopper on the menu. You have to get rid of the mayo, and you don’t get any cheese on it. So honestly, I’d just prefer to make them at home! Plus they are way cheaper too!

You can make them on the BBQ Grill for that Char-Broiled Burger King Flavor too!

Ingredients for an Impossible Whopper

  • Meat – Obviously, Impossible Meat is your best bet, but you can also use Beyond Meat or whatever your favorite store-bought vegan meat is. Or you can make my TVP Burger, Black Bean Burger or Veggie Smash Burger (though this will be different, it will still be good!)
  • Buns – Make sure you get large sesame seeded buns, not the small ones!
  • Ketchup and Mayo – Use your favorite ketchup and Vegan Mayo!
  • Cheese – I used Daiya American, but use whatever you like!
  • Lettuce, Onion, Tomato, Pickles – The classic toppings for a Whopper! Add or subtract whatever you like!
  • Smoked Salt and Smoked Paprika – for optional Smokey flavors to match the Char-Broiled flavor of Burger King, you can add some Smoked Salt or Smoked Paprika (or both). Or grill on an outdoor BBQ grill!

How to Make an Impossible Whopper

If grilling on an outdoor BBQ grill, you won’t need the Smoked Salt or Paprika. If cooking burgers on a skillet, you can add them for an extra Smokey flavor. Just mix them in by hand.

Roll a 4 oz portion into a ball. Form patties either by hand, or by pressing between two pieces of parchment paper with a burger press or stiff spatula.

Get an outdoor BBQ grill or indoor non-stick or well seasoned cast iron skillet heated over medium heat. Dry toast the burger buns until golden brown. Remove and then add the burger patty. Season with salt and pepper (you can skip the salt if you added the smoked salt).

Grill burger patty for 3 – 4 minutes or until well browned. Then flip, add the vegan cheese on top. Squirt a few drops of water and cover the pan to melt the cheese. If using a BBQ grill, simply cover with the lid.

Once cheese is melted, remove and assemble burger from bottom to top as follows: bottom bun, cheeseburger patty, pickles, ketchup, onions, tomato, lettuce, mayo, top bun. Enjoy!
