Vegan Yum Yum Sauce

The Iconic YUM YUM Sauce, but we’re gonna ditch the dairy and eggs and make it VEGAN! It’s still Super YUM YUM!

Full disclosure, I’ve never had Yum Yum Sauce. In fact, I had never heard of it until a few months back as I was walking through the store. I was browsing the condiments aisle and saw it. “Yum Yum Sauce? What the heck is that! I bet it has eggs in it!” And sure enough it did!

Well I went ahead and searched for it on the internet, and found that it’s a beloved sauce used in Japanese steak houses. I unfortunately did not go to that many such places before going vegan. However, when I perused all the recipes I found online, they did seem to be quite easy and delicious.

My recipe is basically based off of those, but I added a few ingredients that I thought might make it even yummier. Some rice vinegar, sesame oil and MSG! I realize that’s not authentic, so leave it out if you like. But when I made the sauce without it, I felt like it needed a bit more zap. And so I added them and that seemed to do the trick!

I also found a video on YouTube by Jason Farmer. He’s famous for doing deep dives on these kinds of recipes, and according to him, Benihana makes it with heavy cream. I thought about adding some coconut cream to make it more decadent and to be more authentic. But ultimately I decided on making it as easy as possible!

But this stuff is super freaking yummy and I don’t know if I can eat fried rice without it from here on out!

Ingredients

  • Vegan Mayo – This is the base of the sauce and it’s pretty mandatory!
  • Ketchup – This is gonna give us that orange hue and some umami sweetness!
  • Vegan Butter – I’ve never tried adding melted vegan butter to a sauce like this, but it’s delicious!
  • Hot Sauce – I used sriracha. Not all recipes have hot sauce in them, but I always like making things a little spicy if possible.
  • Rice Vinegar, Sesame Oil, MSG – These are some ingredients I added. I didn’t see any other recipes that used them, but they really do make the sauce that much better in my opinion!

Storage

This sauce will last for 3-5 days, but let’s be honest, you’re gonna want to eat it all before then! You can use it on some fried rice or even one of the recipes below!

Vegan Yum Yum Sauce

Servings 1 1/4 cups

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup vegan mayo
  • 2 Tbsp ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp melted vegan butter
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp sriracha
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp MSG
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Simply combine everything together and adjust to taste! Store in the fridge and use within 5 days.
