Animal Fries
These In-N-Out style Animal fries are super saucy and cheesy, and on top of that these ones are totally VEGAN!

In-N-Out’s Fries are notoriously not good, so in order to make them edible, a lot of folks order them “Animal-Style” which means some melted cheese, special sauce and caramelized onions. The good news is, using frozen fries will get you a much better spud than In-N-Out, and these are easy to make!
Especially if you make my Vegan Double Double and have leftover sauce and onions which you will!

What’s the best fry for Animal fries?
Look you can use homemade fries if you like, but I’ve done that in the past. I find that they are laborious, take a long time and are messy and there is a lot of room for error. I typically freeze them too (which In-N-Out doesn’t do) since that helps them get crispy, so we might as well just use some frozen fries as a smart shortcut!

The best frozen fries that I can find for these are the Ore Ida Fast Food Fries. They are also cut perfectly thin which is difficult to do by hand without a french fry press.

ingredients for Animal fries
- In-N-Out Sauce – I will include the recipe for this in the recipe card, but it’s super easy to make!

- Vegan Cheese – Use your favorite yellow cheese, I like Follow Your Heart and Daiya.
- Caramelized Onions – These do take a while to make, so I recommend making a big batch of my caramelized onions and freezing so you can make some fries whenever you want!

how to make Animal fries
First whip up the Caramelized Onions and Special Sauce.
Cook your Fries according to package instructions, either Air Fry or Deep Fry!
Add them to a wire rack and salt them immediately, or toss them in a bowl with some salt!
To melt the cheese, I will do a trick where I’ll heat up a pan, add a little water and then the cheese right in the pan. You only need to heat it for like 10 seconds. Then quickly scoop it up with a non-stick spatula.
Slide the cheese onto the fries, followed by the sauce and onions and enjoy!
storage
I recommend making the fries fresh. The sauce and onions should be refrigerated and eaten within a week. You can also freeze the onions for later use too!

Animal Fries
Ingredients
- 1 Bag Frozen Fast Food Style Fries (1 lb. 10 oz)
- 6 – 8 slices Vegan American Cheese
Grilled Onions
- 3 lbs. Yellow or Brown Onions (diced)
- 2 Tbsp Vegan Butter
- 2 Tbsp Neutral Oil (Vegetable, Canola, etc)
- Salt
- Sugar
Special Sauce
- 1 cup Vegan Mayo
- 1/4 cup Ketchup
- 2 Tbsp Dill or Sweet Relish
- 1 Tbsp Vegan Worcestershire
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- Salt & Pepper (to taste)
Instructions
Grilled Onions
- The most time consuming part of this is grilling the onions, so let’s start that before anything else. Add the vegan butter and oil to a pan over medium / medium high heat. Once melted and bubbling, add your onions and stir to coat. Stir it frequently, and after 10 minutes, add in a pinch of salt and sugar, which will help with the flavor and browning.
- You can try to multitask and grill the onions while you prepare the rest of the burger components, but either way, just keep an eye on them and make sure they don’t brown too fast, or even worse, burn! Lower the heat as needed, stir frequently, and deglaze with some water if they stick to the pan. They should be perfect in about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Once they are done, remove from the heat and reserve.
Special Sauce
- Make the special sauce by combining all the ingredients in a bowl, taste and adjust for seasoning and store in the fridge.
