Tofu Taco Meat
This Tofu Taco Meat is ready in about 20 minutes, and it’s perfect for just about any taco, burrito you can think of!

My Tofu Ground Beef recipes is one of my most popular, so I thought it would behoove me to make a version that’s perfect for tacos, burritos and just about any Taco Bell copycat recipe.

In fact, this is the first thing I’m making in my quest to veganize the entire Taco Bell menu! While I do have a few Taco Bell recipes, there’s definitely a lot more to tackle, and this Tofu Taco Meat seemed like a good place to start!
It’s ridiculously delicious and easy to make too! In fact, it’s easier and faster than my original Tofu Ground Beef recipe, and it’s great for meal prepping as well!

INGREDIENTS FOR TOFU Taco Meat
- Tofu – I strongly recommend using Super Firm Tofu, the kind that’s vacuum packed and doesn’t require pressing. If you can only find Extra Firm, you can use that, just make sure to press it for at least 30 minutes.

- Vegan Beef Bouillon – can sub for Veggie Bouillon too.

- Soy Sauce – Or Tamari, Coconut Aminos
- Nutritional Yeast – to make sure we get our B12 (and because we love flavor!)
- Taco Seasoning – I have a homemade seasoning I highly recommend you use! Otherwise, use your favorite store-bought or the Taco Bell Seasoning packets, but in my opinion they are not nearly as flavorful as my homemade version!

- Chipotles in Adobo – for some smokiness and heat. If you really don’t like any spice whatsoever you can leave it out.

- Tomato Paste – to help deepen the flavors.
- Water – I recommend starting with 1/2 cup of water and adding more as needed.
- Oil – you can skip if you’re oil free but it’s not much for 5 servings!
- Gravy Master / Kitchen Bouquet – optional for a darker color!
how to make Tofu TAco Meat
Take the tofu out of it’s packaging and pat dry with a paper towel. Crumble it with your hands. Don’t worry about getting everything into even crumbles, we can handle that later!
Once the tofu is crumbled, make the marinade by simply whisking everything in a bowl.
Next in a large skillet over medium heat, cook the tofu crumbles for about 5 minutes to dry them out a bit. You may need to do this in batches or in two skillets to avoid crowding the pan (and steaming the tofu).
You can use this time to continue to break up the tofu into smaller pieces with a spatula or potato masher (just make sure to use a silicone masher if you are using a non-stick pan like me).

After about 5 minutes, the tofu should get a little color on it and be slightly golden brown. Add in the marinade and stir to coat. If the marinade is too thick, add a little more water until it easily coats the tofu.
Heat through for a couple minutes. Taste and adjust for seasoning until it’s to your liking. Add more water or broth if needed.
Enjoy immediately on tacos, burritos, whatever you like!
Store leftovers in the fridge for 3 – 4 days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.

This taco meat recipe was a huge hit at my house. It was so inexpensive and easy to make and even my meat-loyal husband asked for not only seconds, but thirds as well. As someone with a very limited diet due to sensory processing, the plant based options here were a godsend when I found theeburgerdude on youtube. Next, we will be trying your vegan jack in the box tacos. Cannot wait to see how they taste.
Oh nice, that makes my day to hear!! Hope you dig the Jack in the Box tacos too, one of my favorites! Thank you!
this recipe is so delicious cheap and easy – a winning combo 🙂
Used it in tacos will definitely be making this again!!
Nice, so glad you dig it!! Thanks!
Has all the things I like about traditional taco meat and none of the things I don’t like. My first recipe from this site. Looking forward to trying more!
This is so good. I eat it in a burrito without even adding anything. My family of meat-eaters loves it too, not that that’s important but it goes to show it exceeds expectations of vegan food!
Excellent, glad to hear it, thank you!
This was perfect for my nachos, thank you!!!!!
Excellent! I love nachos!!
Love this recipe. I made it oil free. I’m not completely meat/dairy free, but this recipe will forever replace taco meat made out of ground beef for me. Thank you.d
Nice glad to hear it worked out without oil! Thank you!
I made the tofu taco meat last night and it was so good! I used extra firm tofu. To make up for the water weight lost, I added 1/4 cup TVP. Also did oil free. It was fantastic in my taco salad with homemade beans! I will definitely try more of your recipes.

Oh heck yes, that sounds awesome, love the idea of adding in TVP too! Thank you!
So simple..yet so delicious!
It’s crazy on a pizza with fresh jalapeños and some chipotle. 🌶️🔥🤤
Thank you. 🙏🏻
Oh yum on pizza sounds good! My favorite pizza was a chorizo and jalapeno one that I got in Bolivia!

Thank you so much! I appreciate that! Happy New Year!
Hi! I can’t find Gravy Master where I live. What commercial product can I use instead? Or do you have a homemade solution? Thanks a lot!
Hi, you can use kitchen bouquet or dark soy sauce too, but you can also just leave it out!
This was great. I used it in the bolognese recipe. I set some aside to eat while I was cooking 😀
Haha, awesome, always good to have a little extra for the tofu tax! Thank you!
This is now my favourite recipe for taco or burrito ‘meat’. Easy, flavourful and has a great texture. Thee Burger Dude just knows how to make everything taste good!
My favorite too, so stoked you dig it! Thank you!
Amazing!!!
Taste and texture is on point!!! Used Fava tofu.
Nice, I need to try that tofu, thank you!
Omg, I love this recipe. Amazing. Thank you for this great recipe. Now I can have a taco or burrito again.
I never leave comments or reviews, but I just made this and it is so delicious! I plan to use it for the Mexican Pizza recipe from your website for meal prep this week. Will definitely be making this again!
Thank you for leaving a review!! It makes my day, hope the Mexican Pizza is good!
