Buffalo Tofu

This Tangy and Delicious Buffalo Tofu is quick and easy, perfect for sharing as a Game Day Snack or a Easy Weeknight Meal!

When I made my Crispy Fried Tofu recipe a while back, I knew it would be a great blank canvas for so many other types of recipes. I used it in my Orange Tofu, and now my new favorite is this Buffalo Tofu!

It’s super easy to make, since we won’t be breading it the way you normally would with a dry and wet batter. All we need to do is coat it in some seasonings and cornstarch and we’ll get a nice crunchy outer layer in no time!

What’s the best tofu for Frying?

I highly recommend Super Firm Tofu as it’s vacuum packed and doesn’t require pressing. It has very little moisture so it will crisp up much easier!

ingredients for Buffalo Tofu

  • Soy Sauce – To add some nice salty umami!
  • Buffalo Sauce – Not only are we coating the tofu after we fry it, but we’ll add some before frying too!
  • Seasonings – We’ll be using some nutritional yeast, onion and garlic powder, smoked paprika, cayenne and optionally some celery salt.
  • Cornstarch – For the crispy layer!

how to make Buffalo Tofu

You can use store-bought Vegan Buffalo Sauce for a shortcut.

Or make my homemade Vegan Buffalo Sauce!

Break your tofu into bite size pieces. This will get you rougher edges than simply cutting the tofu into cubes. These craggier edges will crisp up more!

Then toss the tofu chunks in the soy sauce and buffalo sauce. After that toss them in the seasonings.

If you have some crumbled bits of tofu after tossing, you can actually smush them together to form a nugget. It might be a little salty though just FYI!

Then add a layer of oil to a 12″ skillet. Use a neutral flavored high smoke point oil (Vegetable, Canola, Avocado etc). Heat the oil to 375 F.

Once oil is heated to 375 F, add the tofu chunks and fry for 3 – 5 minutes. Then flip and fry for another 3 – 5 minutes or until golden brown.

Let them rest on a wire rack, and then toss them in the Buffalo Sauce!

Serve with some Vegan Ranch and enjoy!

storage

These are best eaten fresh, but I found that eating cold leftovers was good too. Actually reminded me a bit of cold fried chicken, weird!

You can also reheat them in the Air Fryer for a few minutes, try 350 F for about 5 – 6 minutes.

can i air-fry or bake Buffalo Tofu?

Yes, but in my tests, the Air Fryer just couldn’t match the taste and texture of the pan fried version. But if you want to Air Fry them, spray them with a little oil and Air Fry at 375 F for 8 – 10 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Instructions

  • If preparing homemade Vegan Buffalo Sauce, do that first!
  • Break your tofu into bite size pieces. This will get you rougher edges than simply cutting the tofu into cubes. These craggier edges will crisp up more!
  • Then toss the tofu chunks in the soy sauce and 1 Tbsp of buffalo sauce. After that toss them in the seasonings and cornstarch. You can eat one to make sure they are seasoned to your taste.
  • If you have some crumbled bits of tofu after tossing, you can actually smush them together to form a nugget. It might be a little salty though just FYI!
  • Next, add a layer of oil to a 12" skillet. Use a neutral flavored high smoke point oil (Vegetable, Canola, Avocado etc). Heat the oil to 375 F. Keep an eye on the oil so it doesn't burn.
  • Once oil is heated to 375 F, add the tofu chunks and fry for 3 – 5 minutes. Then flip and fry for another 3 – 5 minutes or until golden brown.
Make sure you don't crowd the pan. A block of tofu in a 12" skillet is almost crowding, so you can do it in 2 batches if you are unsure about it!
  • Let them rest on a wire rack, and then toss them in the buffalo sauce in a large bowl. Make them as saucy as you'd like! Then dig in and enjoy!

Notes

*I recommend using Super Firm Tofu, the kind that's vacuum packed. If you can only find Extra Firm, you'll need to press it for at least 30 minutes to get rid of the excess water.
